Yazaki Corporation Develops Reused Energy Storage System "B∀TTERFLY^®"

CANTON, Michigan—Yazaki North America (YNA) is privileged to announce that its parent company, Yazaki Corporation (YC), has developed "B∀TTERFLY^®," an energy storage system that reuses onboard batteries exhibiting varying states of deterioration. Demonstration testing has commenced at a facility located in Y-CITY, Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This initiative aims to facilitate the reuse of onboard batteries and to verify novel technologies that promote renewable energy utilization and a sustainable society. Yazaki intends to enter the reused energy storage system market by 2030.

As the global community progresses toward a decarbonized society, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is accelerating, presenting challenges related to the processing of used onboard batteries. These batteries exhibit degradation at varying rates, complicating reuse efforts. In response to this challenge, YC has developed "B∀TTERFLY^®, which utilizes proprietary algorithms and control technology.

The demonstration test will assess the technical feasibility and operational performance of "B∀TTERFLY^®", with a particular emphasis on the efficacy of its proprietary control algorithm and anomaly detection and control functions. The testing commenced in January 2025, with the objective of collecting data to inform future commercialization efforts. YC aims to commercialize the system for industrial and grid-scale energy storage applications.
